Don’t miss out this opportunity to update your knowledge of safety and quality in clinical practice. This is available for all healthcare professionals who need an update on safety and quality within in clinical practice. HSU recognises that those registered with the GCC must align with Principle B of the Code of Practice and a separate break out room will be offered for those delegates to provide guidance relevant to this years focused reflection.
Learning objectives:
• Identify common clinical safety risks in clinical practice and apply strategies to minimise harm.
• Demonstrate how reflective practice, audit, and evidence-informed decision-making improves quality of care.
Apply appropriate safeguarding procedures, including documentation and escalation.
• Explain the core elements of GCC Principle B and how they relate to safe, high‑quality care.

Course timetable
0–5 min | Welcome & Introduction
- Brief introduction to session aims and learning outcomes.
- Quick poll/discussion: “What does safety look like in your daily practice?”
5–15 min | Section 1 – Understanding Safety & Quality in Clinical Practice
- Quality as a continuous process: evidence-informed care, feedback, reflective practice.
- Think‑Pair‑Share activity.
15–30 min | Section 2 – Clinical Risks & How to Manage Them
- Common risk areas: adverse reactions, red flags, consent, communication errors, record keeping.
- Case review activity.
30–45 min | Section 3 – Quality Improvement in Practice
- Audit and quality improvement examples.
- Mini-exercise: identify one audit area.
45–60 min | Section 4 – What Is Safeguarding?
Definitions and legal frameworks (Children Act, Care Act, Prevent).
The Four Rs: Recognise, Respond, Record, Refer.
Documentation and escalation.
Legal information-sharing rules.
Working with agencies.
60-80 min | Section 5 – Break Out
Room 1 – GCC registrants – talk around CPD requirements and how to demonstrate meeting the focused reflection
Room 2 – All other participants – talk around how to implement the Audit Idea considered in Section 3
80–90 min | Pulling It All Together & Close

Course leaders
Daniel Heritage is the Chiropractic Clinic Lead at Health Sciences University, where he is responsible for ensuring high-quality patient care within the University’s chiropractic service. He ensures the safety and wellbeing of patients, clinicians, and students. Daniel also holds a number of roles with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and other Professional Standards Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs). Drawing on his experience, he actively supports the integration of patient safety and care across education, clinical practice, and the wider health and social care landscape.
Dr Alister du Rose is a chiropractic academic and researcher with a focus on spinal biomechanics, professional practice and musculoskeletal health. He serves as a Senior Lecturer, contributing to the development of evidence-based practice and the education of future healthcare professionals.
Dr du Rose holds several leadership roles within the profession. He is an Executive Board Member of the Society for Back Pain Research (SBPR), Chair of the inter-institutional research group aimed at fostering collaborative research initiatives, and an active Member of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). Through these roles, he supports the integration of research, education, and professional practice to enhance patient care and the wider healthcare landscape.
