This seminar is for any healthcare professional who is expected to refer patients for a medical exposure as part of their working practice and physically involved in the exposure of patients to ionising radiation (This is an update in the last hour so it is only for suitable qualified staff who use ionising radiation in a medical setting)
- Radiation protection Update for Referrers / Practitioners and Operators 9am - 12
- Radiation Protection Update Practitioners and Operators only 9am - 1pm (to stay on for 1 extra hour)
All professionals who refer patients for medical exposures of ionising radiation need to make sure that they receive regular Radiation Protection updates under the current legislation. This course is for employees that need to adhere to the current Radiation protection Legislation (IRR 17 and IR(ME)R17) when referring a someone for a medical exposure who need a refresher on this area.

- Introduction to the Topic
- Refresher on the Radiobiology of Ionising Radiation
- SI units used in Radiation Physics
- Principles of Radiation Protection
- Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17)
- Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R17)
- Current Care Quality Commission (CQC) IR(ME)R reports and any relevant topics surrounding these
Seminar aims, objectives and outcomes:
- To provide an update on the physics behind the medical use and protection of patients, members of staff and the public when using ionising radiation.
- To provide a refresher on the current radiation protection legislation
- To provide information on any current themes relevant to practice when using ionising radiation in a medical setting
Speaker
Shelley Blane (MSc, BSc, HCPC Clinical Scientist)
Shelley is a clinical scientist with over 33 years’ experience in Radiotherapy and has lectured radiation protection for the last 20 years. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at HSU on the Radiography team. Shelley has a masters in Radiation Physics and a HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist and up to date training in Radiation Protection and the current legislation.
