This seminar is for anyone who finds themselves feeling anxious or uncertain about referring their patients to another health professional – whether sending someone back to their GP, to a specialist, or for a second opinion.
We will cover the basics of who, what, how, where and when to refer patients to another health professional. We’ll talk about the reasons for making a referral, how to discuss the decision with the patient, knowing the right processes and pathways, how to structure a good referral letter, and building your own referral network.
The seminar will enable participants to:
- Recognize when a referral to another healthcare professional is appropriate
- Understand the basics of referral pathways in the NHS, for private insurance providers, and self-pay options
- Discuss referrals with patients, communicate about pros and cons and offer appropriate choices
- Write a confident referral letter that communicates your concerns clearly and shares relevant history and assessment details without overstepping professional boundaries
- Think about appropriate ways to communicate urgent concerns about patient safety.
- Develop good working relationships with colleagues in other healthcare professions.
