We are delighted to offer a three-part webinar series in collaboration with the Hong Kong Chiropractic College Foundation, designed specifically for primary care clinicians seeking to enhance their knowledge and clinical decision-making in musculoskeletal (MSK) practice. Delivered by academic and clinical experts, these sessions will explore contemporary approaches to assessing and managing patients presenting with MSK conditions in community and primary care settings.

The series begins by examining pain and the influence of contextual factors on clinical outcomes, highlighting current evidence on the biopsychosocial dimensions of pain and their relevance to everyday practice. The second session focuses on the recognition and assessment of lower limb neuropathies, providing practical insights into differential diagnosis and clinical management. The final webinar addresses the critical topic of red flags and systemic diseases that can masquerade as musculoskeletal pain, supporting clinicians in identifying serious pathology and making appropriate referral decisions.

Together, these sessions aim to strengthen diagnostic reasoning, improve patient-centred care, and support evidence-informed practice for healthcare professionals working across primary care settings.

Title: Understanding pain and the role of contextual factors in MSK practice

Content:

This 90-minute Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session will provide an up-to-date overview of contemporary pain science, integrating advances in neuroscience with emerging computational and biopsychosocial models of pain.

The first part of the session will be delivered by Dr Solomon Segal, Neuroscientist and Senior Lecturer in Anatomy at Health Sciences University. Dr Segal will examine the biological foundations of pain, beginning with the science of nociception and pain, before reviewing major theories of pain and introducing the role of predictive processing in shaping pain perception and experience.

Building upon these concepts, the second part will be presented by Professor Dave Newell, Professor of Integrated Musculoskeletal Care at Health Sciences University. Professor Newell will explore the Active Inference framework as a contemporary model for understanding pain and discuss the influence of contextual factors on pain perception, clinical presentation, and rehabilitation.

Together, these complementary presentations will provide participants with an integrated perspective on the mechanisms underlying pain and their implications for contemporary musculoskeletal practice.
