Course details
This unit aims to equip you with appropriate professional attributes, knowledge, understanding and
skills required to become / further develop as an effective, reflective educator in a professional
educator role across a range of areas such as workforce/service education and higher education. In
so doing, this should support the development and delivery of high quality, educational
interventions. This will be facilitated through robust, appropriate education and training strategies
aimed at educators working in health education either in higher education or healthcare settings.
You will start the unit by reflecting on and discussing your own personal learning needs to enable
you to focus on key areas for further development, using the unit to support this journey. You will
be able to discuss and debate central themes and issues in education in your discipline area for
relevant stakeholders (students, staff, patients).
The unit aims to facilitate development of your education practice and understanding of theoretical
perspectives on teaching, learning and assessment. You are encouraged to make critical and
innovative connections between policy, educational theory and your own practice. You will be
supported in analysing your own practice as an educator, evaluating a range of educational
strategies in your own professional context and applying these ideas to the development of your
developing education practice.
Consideration of what enables a considerations such as an inclusive curricula will be a thread
through the unit. This is alongside encouraging development as an advocate for learning across
health education provider settings. The content includes introducing principles of good practice in
assessment and evaluation, giving feedback and providing support and engaging with learners’
experiences, with opportunities to apply this knowledge and skills into practice. You will be
supported to enhance your analytical and critical thinking skills, whilst developing judgement,
empathy and innovation that contemporary health and social care education theory and practice
delivery and education leadership demands.
The unit is open to and encourages an interprofessional cohort of students with its focus on shared
knowledge and skills for education practice within healthcare/academic settings. This is alongside
application, adaptation and flexibility to meet the needs of individual workplace settings and the
wide range of practitioners working across these areas. This provides a richness to the learning
experience and adds depth and breadth to knowledge and skill development for students
undertaking the unit. Observation of teaching is central to successfully completing this unit. It
provides an opportunity to develop and try out new perspectives and approaches to learning,
teaching and assessment with the support and guidance of the teaching team. The purpose of
observing your teaching is to engage you in a reflective, developmental process that enables you to
consider your education practice, and identify ways in which it can be further developed.
